Widened definition increases ADHD cases

As part of the BMJ campaign, Too Much Medicine, researchers from Bond University’s Centre for Evidence Based Practice called for a stepped diagnostic approach to help reduce the risk of potentially harmful overdiagnosis, particularly among children.

Australian data shows a 73% increase in prescribing rates for ADHD medication between 2000 and 2011. Although the authors accepted clinicians were now better at detecting the disorder, some of the rise was attributed to overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis.
