Women, youth at higher risk from radiation

Population health experts are calling on doctors to consider referring patients to other imaging modalities with lower or no radiation burden, such as ultrasound, a plain radiograph or MRI imaging, where possible, to reduce population radiation exposure burden and subsequent cancer incidence.

In a review of records from all Medicare-subsided CT scans and corresponding dosimetry in Australia between 2006 and 2012, researchers from the University of Western Australia and Curtin University found that CT scan use increased by 36% over the period.
