Worldwide antibiotic campaign to combat ‘impending catastrophe’

In a Lancet commentary, Professor Laura Piddock, president of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), said global alliances involving government agencies, NGOs and academics were needed to regenerate antibacterial drug discovery.

Professor Piddock said pharmaceutical companies needed to recognise that many expensive medicines in their portfolios might be useless if patients start to succumb to fatal infections.

“This fact alone should be an incentive for pharmaceutical companies to continue or re-enter antibiotic development,” she said.
