Zika virus threat to blood safety in South Pacific

Infectious diseases specialists from Tahiti have also confirmed that Zika virus has the potential to be transmitted via transfusion, with a study showing an unexpectedly high number of asymptomatic blood donors showing as positive.

Zika virus is transmitted by several Aedes mosquito species, turning up in Asia and in Europe since the first isolate was found in a monkey in Uganda in 1947.

Molecular testing of all blood donations for Zika was introduced in French Polynesia last November.
