THE body’s preferred fuel source for exercise is carbohydrate where it is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.

Elite and recreational athletes in general need 5–6g of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight per day, which for an 80kg athlete is around 400–500g per day.

Although as the type, intensity or duration of training and competition increases, carbohydrate needs will also rise. But it is safe to say there is no place for a low-carb diet in an athlete’s life.
