Deciphering confusing nutrition advice

When the pendulum swings to damning sugar, sales of sweet foods and drinks may not fall, but reported consumption does.

Over the past 50 years, I've watched opinions about the ideal diet swing widely, and sometimes, wildly. It's been inevitable in a relatively young science like nutrition, especially with so much continuing research.

The internet and celebrity chefs have contributed to the confusion, expressing ideas and often selling products in blogs and via social media. Many people are unable to evaluate these ideas and theories and may give them as much credence as reports from genuine experts.

It would be naive, however, to assume that reputable journals carry only reliable opinions.
