How GPs can PrEP for treating their patients with HIV

The listing of pre-exposure prophylaxis on the PBS is a turning point for HIV treatment in Australia

The big news story for HIV in 2018 was the listing of pre-exposure propyhylaxis (PrEP) on the PBS from 1 April.

This means PrEP will be subsidised on the PBS, that all GPs can prescribe it and community pharmacies can dispense the medication.

PrEP involves people at risk of HIV taking antiretroviral medication to prevent infection, an approach that has proved to be highly effective in preventing HIV transmission.1

More than 8000 people in NSW are receiving PrEP through the EPIC
