Managing rabies exposure
Access to pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis is the key to controlling the impact of rabies.
At both the Asia Pacific Travel Health Conference in Vietnam in May and the Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine in Norway in June this year, the issue most hotly debated was what advice should be offered to travellers regarding rabies protection.
Fortunately, the discussion is not driven by a sudden increase of cases in travellers but rather is related to the fact that more people are going to areas of risk and a substantial number are bitten by animals while in these places.
A region of danger
In the Asia-Pacific region, bicycle tours of Vietnam and Cambodia are one example of an increasingly popular activity that is associated with a risk of dog bite for travellers
