Pre-eclampsia, calcium and magnesium

There is strong evidence for the use of magnesium sulfate in the prevention and treatment of PE in a number of Cochrane reviews, which also demonstrate it being a superior treatment to other medications in reducing maternal seizures and death, although more research is required.1-5

The WHO recommends calcium supplementation of 1.5–2g daily for pregnant women with low dietary calcium intake.

A recent Cochrane review identified a total of 24 trials using calcium in the prevention or treatment of PE.6
