Vitamin D deficiency: a public health issue

Vitamin D deficiency is fast developing into an important public health issue. Vitamin D deficiency is particularly common in people living in the southern latitudes of Australia and is prevalent in high-risk groups, including people with naturally dark skin, the elderly, those living in long-term residential care, office workers, people who deliberately avoid the sun and those who wear concealing clothes for religious or cultural purposes. Vitamin D deficiency is contributing to a rise in rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.
