Self monitoring blood glucose debatable

The ongoing debate about the value of patients with type 2 diabetes self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) has reared its head once again, with more research finding it makes no difference to glycaemic control.

Published in this week’s Diabetologia the study of almost 300 type 2 diabetes patients on conventional insulin treatment found patients given weekly SMBG readings or HbA1c results showed no improvement in glycaemic control.
