Academics call for Tamiflu transparency

Editor-in-chief Dr Fiona Godlee has written an open letter to the company as part of a new “open data campaign” urging it to honour a promise made three years ago to release full clinical trial reports.

“Billions of pounds of public money have been spent on [Tamiflu] and yet the evidence on its effectiveness and safety remains hidden from appropriate and necessary independent scrutiny,” Dr Godlee wrote.

In December 2009 Roche promised to release full clinical trial reports in response to a BMJ investigation and researchers from the Cochrane Collaboration, including Australia’s Professor Chris Del Mar.

It found no clear evidence that Tamiflu, which is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines, prevented complications such as pneumonia in healthy people.
