Some even have tattoos on their chests that state, “Do not resuscitate” or “NFR”.
These tattoos are not recognised by the law. They do not constitute a legally binding request and there is no nationally consistent law governing what happens if a person who has indicated they don’t want resuscitation stops breathing or their heart stops beating.
Doctors in these situations face many difficult legal and ethical uncertainties and the different language and terms used can be confusing.
