Doctors feel shame and stigma on return to work after long illness

Research published online in BMJ Open, from interviews with 19 doctors, revealed doctors who had been on long term sick leave – six months or more – found it hard to return to work because they were overwhelmed with feelings of shame and failure, and feared the disapproval of colleagues.

Dr Stan Doumani, a Canberra GP and convenor of the ACT Doctors’ Health Advisory Service, said while the study’s findings were not surprising, there remained a number of myths regarding doctors’ health.
