A DECADE ago Australia’s first evidence-based guidelines for managing acute low back pain in general practice had just been produced by an RACGP working party for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

Back then it was predicted that if the guidelines were followed, the number of x-rays ordered by GPs could halve.

The working party chairman at the time, musculoskeletal physician and GP Dr Victor Wilk, told MO last week that sadly, as with a lot of guidelines, they did not get implemented
