Five years before the quadrivalent HPV vaccine became available on the NIP, MO reported it would be at least 20 years before the need for Pap smears would be significantly reduced.

A clinical trial of nearly 2400 women had just been published showing a monovalent version of the HPV vaccine demonstrated 100% protection against HPV-16.

Gynaecological oncologist Dr Gerry Wain, from Westmead Hospital, Sydney, said it would be “five or 10 years before the vaccine is up and running [on the market or in mass vaccination programs]
