GPs must be at the heart of PHNs: AMA

GPs must be at the heart of Primary Health Networks (PHNs), and the government must rule out using them as fundholders of GP services, AMA vice president Dr Stephen Parnis says.

Launching the AMA’s position statement on PHNs, Dr Parnis says GPs must be heavily involved in the leadership and management of PHNs, with local doctors on PHN boards and on all key committees. 

But he says the government’s recent mental health reforms point to a bigger, more controversial and “potentially unwelcome”
