Introduction

THERE is clear evidence that young Australians are at higher risk of some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than older groups. 

Current guidelines advocate screening for people younger than under 25 years and other at-risk groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), sex industry workers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders (ATSI) but don’t include middle-aged and older heterosexual Australians.

Of course, many people within this category are unlikely to be at risk, such as those in long-term monogamous relationships. 

However, there are several subsets of ‘middle-aged and older heterosexuals’ who are at risk of STIs and would benefit from screening and safe-sex education.
