‘Intolerable’ delays over withdrawal of life support

UK families of patients in a permanent vegetative state (PVS) are facing “intolerable” delays in the withdrawal of life support for, say medical ethics experts.

Professors Jenny Kitzinger of Cardiff University and Celia Kitzinger of York University cite the case of a young UK woman who was put on life support after a catastrophic brain injury in 2012 from which she never regained consciousness.

They became involved after the woman’s mother pleaded with them in 2015 to help her get a court hearing for the withdrawal of life
