Clumsy feet the clue to a life-changing diagnosis

A recreational touch footballer's difficulty wearing thongs and subpar on-field performance point to a serious condition

Ken, a 65-year-old businessman, presents having lost the ability to extend his left great toe over the preceding six weeks.

The only time he has really been aware of this has been when trying to get his toe into his thongs, and put on socks.

He does not recall any injury or accident. There is no associated pain, tenderness, redness or swelling.

On direct questioning, he thinks that he has been a bit clumsier on his feet over the last few months. He has had a couple of stumbles, where he thinks he tripped over his great toe and left forefoot.
