Constipation diagnosis takes a turn

When an elderly patient presents with abdominal distention and constipation, there’s a twist in the diagnosis

Ron is an 88-year-old nursing home resident who presents with his daughter to his regular GP with a 2-3-day history of constipation and severe abdominal distension.

He reports normal appetite with no abdominal pain and has no other systemic signs or symptoms.

Ron’s medical history includes dementia, depression, gout, GORD, stroke, recurrent SCC/BCC and longstanding constipation.

His current medications are clopidogrel, pantoprazole, escitalopram, allopurinol, paracetamol and furosemide.
