Deprescribing diabetes meds with a low-carb approach

GPs can offer carbohydrate restriction as an option for glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes

Alan, a 72-year-old with longstanding type 2 diabetes, presents to a new GP saying he would like to take less medication.

“Doc, I’m rattling,” he exclaims.

Some of his friends have mentioned experiencing success with this GP, using a low-carb dietary approach, and Alan would like to know more, especially if it could help him reduce his medication.

Alan’s past history includes hypertension, obesity, reflux, fatty liver and an acute MI six years ago.
