Lee is a 54-year-old Chinese woman who presents to her local ED with severe right lower abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting. She denies any constitutional symptoms including fever, weight loss, night sweats, rash or joint pain.

For the past five years, she has experienced intermittent abdominal pain. She has had two admissions for bowel obstructions and has responded to conservative symptomatic management each time.
