What’s behind these dark spots and diarrhoea?
Hugh, a 60-year-old public servant, presents with a two-day history of diarrhoea and mild abdominal cramps.
He denies any associated nausea, vomiting or fever. The stools were initially watery, now semi-solid, and have been a normal colour, with no blood or mucus visible. His partner has had similar symptoms.
There is no clear recent dietary culprit; all meals have been home-cooked in the past week. He has not had any antibiotics recently.
Hugh has a past history of asthma, allergic rhinitis, hepatic steatosis, hypercholesterolaemia, sinus surgery and is overweight.
