Medical Must-See: A foreign body no doctor would want to miss

Dry wood can mimic air on CT, making retained fragments easy to miss after craniofacial trauma, doctors say.

Doctors in India are sounding the alarm over a splintered diagnosis after three pieces of wood were missed in a young man’s sino-orbital complex.

Their patient, in his 20s, reported he was involved in a traffic accident 10 days earlier and had a left alar skin laceration sutured at another hospital.

“He complained of sudden diminution of vision in the right eye immediately following the trauma, along with bilateral nasal obstruction and mucopurulent nasal discharge for the past eight days,” said his doctors, from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

A facial examination revealed a healed scar in the left alar region.
