Medical Must-See: A gynaecological tumour that’s one in 3300

A 40-year-old’s painless vulval mass was actually a rare benign smooth muscle tumour, a trio of pathologists discovered.
The patient had slight discomfort but no other symptoms when she presented to an Indian hospital outpatient clinic with painless swelling of her left vulva that had gradually grown.
Physical examination revealed a solid, well-circumscribed and non-tender lump measuring 3cm x 2cm.
The patient had mild anaemia (haemoglobin of 112g/L; reference interval: 125-175), thrombocytosis with platelets of 472 x 109/L (reference interval: 150-450 x 109/L) and a normal white cell count.
