Medical Must-See: A hairy cause of abdominal discomfort

Rupture only occurs in 1-2% of dermoid cyst cases, doctors say.

A Nepalese woman’s weeks-long abdominal discomfort turned out to be a ruptured ovarian dermoid cyst, complete with hairy tufts and greasy material.

The 64-year-old presented to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, where contrast-enhanced abdominal and pelvic CT revealed non-enhancing, fat-attenuating cystic lesions, with internal calcifications in both adnexae.

The patient said she had seen a dhami (traditional healer) 12 years previously, who had made an abdominal incision and removed greasy material laced with hair, before patching her up.

Her imaging findings were consistent with teratomas, the doctors said. They provisionally diagnosed rupture of an ovarian dermoid cyst.
