Medical Must-See: An ascending aortic aneurysm the size of a grapefruit

Symptoms included intermittent chest pain and a hoarse voice.
Cardiac CT scan with contrast showing giant ascending aortic aneurysm.

A giant ascending aortic aneurysm was the unusual cause of this 72-year-old’s hoarse voice and intermittent chest pain.

Ultimately, doctors measured the aneurysm at 12.5cm x 11.27cm x 10cm, about double the diameter associated with a significantly increased risk of dissection or rupture.

The patient presented to the Dr Hasan Sadikin Central General Hospital in Bandung, Indonesia, with a four-year history of intermittent sharp chest pain that had worsened over six months.

The pain radiated into his back, with accompanying shortness of breath.
