Medical Must-See: Australian surgeon removes 2kg hepatocellular carcinoma

An early-career Brisbane surgeon has removed a 2kg tumour from a 67-year-old who had no symptoms and only “slightly abnormal” liver function.
Dr Joel Lewin said that local GP Dr Kerry Hulett referred the patient to him after an ultrasound showed the 15cm mass.
The patient, a retiree named Barrie Tibbetts, “had no symptoms whatsoever” despite mildly abnormal liver function test results.
“Given he’d had a liver condition many years ago, Dr Hulett was very thorough and arranged an ultrasound which showed the mass,” said Dr Lewin, who achieved his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons fellowship in 2020.
