Medical Must-See: Caught between the differential diagnosis and the deep-blue pee

The elderly patient had a history of an enlarged prostrate and bladder spasms.

Urine colour charts are easy to interpret: pale yellow is the sweet spot, while darker shades point to dehydration. But what about blue–green urine reminiscent of Caribbean seas?

This was the question before US doctors at Jefferson Stratford Hospital, New Jersey, who treated an elderly man for bladder problems.

The 75-year-old patient presented to ED complaining of abdominal distention and being unable to urinate for several hours.

He had been evaluated in ED five days prior for urinary hesitancy and distension and diagnosed with bladder spasms.
