Medical Must-See: Chilblains spike after COVID-19 vaccination

The mechanism behind vaccination-related chilblains was unclear, dermatologists said.

In a case that gives flashbacks to 2021, dermatologists initially speculated that COVID-19 had caused their patient’s chilblains, before a repeat reaction after a second Spikevax dose confirmed the real culprit.

The 35-year-old presented to Chiang Mai Hospital in Thailand with chilblains on her fingers and toes that developed nine days after her first dose of the mRNA vaccine.

At first, dermatologists asked about recent acute COVID-19 infection, which the patient denied.

They gave a presumptive diagnosis of Sweet’s syndrome (acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis), while histopathology results backed the diagnosis of chilblains.
