Medical Must-See: Doctors fix a clinical hand-off
The amputation occurred at an unusual site and one of the most difficult for reimplantation, doctors said.
A metal-cutting guillotine made short work of a Mexican man’s hand. It took doctors seven hours to reattach it.
The accident happened when the right hand–dominant patient, 69, was cleaning the guillotine. He presented to hospital 25 minutes later, fully oriented and haemodynamically stable.
Examination showed complete traumatic amputation of the right hand at the carpometacarpal level, with exposed bone and tendons, and active bleeding.
Anteroposterior X-ray “confirmed the level of injury”, his doctors wrote in Radiology Case Reports.
