Medical Must-See: Menstrual cup, up and away

Only five other cases of menstrual cup-related ureterohydronephrosis had been reported, doctors said.

Menstrual cups have become an increasingly popular, environmentally friendly and cost-effective option, but there has been many a slip ‘twixt a cup and a urinary tract.

A woman in her 30s presented to Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark with macroscopic haematuria and a six month history of intermittent lower abdominal and right flank pain.

She was afebrile with a normal serum creatinine and flexible cystoscopy.

CT urography revealed ureterohydronephrosis, an appropriately located copper IUD and a 42mm-wide silicone menstrual cup, tilted at a jaunty angle, near the right ureteral ostium.
