Medical Must-See: More than meets the (very red) eye
This painful red eye in an elderly man with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia coloured his doctors’ initial diagnosis.
The 79-year-old presented to Swiss ophthalmologists after developing acute ocular pain, intense left-sided conjunctival chemosis and mild anterior chamber inflammation accompanied by fine keratic precipitates, suggestive of scleritis.
Best-corrected visual acuity was 20/100 and intraocular pressure measured 10mmHg, the doctors from Geneva University Hospitals said.
Fundus examination revealed extensive serous choroidal detachments, later confirmed by B-scan ultrasonography.
