Medical Must-See: Surgeons remove fetus-in-fetu with teeth and GI tract from newborn’s mouth

The fetus-in-fetu measured 14cm and was connected to the newborn's palate by a stalk.

Doctors have successfully removed a 14cm fetus-in-fetu containing nerves, teeth, bone and a gastrointestinal tract from a newborn’s palate.

The tumour was detected around the baby’s face during an ultrasound at 23 weeks’ gestation.

The baby’s mother, aged in her 20s, was a primigravida with no significant medical or family history, reported clinicians from the Hyogo Prefectural Amagasaki General Medical Center in Japan.

The mass — with solid and cystic components, then measuring 4cm — was initially diagnosed as an epignathus. Fetal ultrasound revealed it was protruding from the oral cavity to the outside. MRI suggested the tumour originated in the pharynx or palate.
