Medical Must-See: The pointy end of hemiplegia

Conservative management proved successful.

The cause of this woman’s hemiplegia? Hard to pin down.

The patient, 73, presented to hospital after experiencing weakness and numbness in the right arm, approximately one hour after acupuncture on her neck and shoulder.

The upper limb showed hyperreflexia, numbness and a positive Hoffmann sign, and the right lower limb showed weakness and a positive Babinski sign, according to her doctors.

She was taking clopidogrel and had a history of hypertension and coronary heart disease.
