Medical Must-See: Toddler’s postaxial polydactyly of the bilateral hand
Surgery to treat postaxial polydactyly is typically performed at around 12 months, but a lack of bony involvement meant this toddler underwent the procedure aged two-and-a-half years.
In a case report, orthopaedic specialist Dr Nomina Pradhan says the boy of Asian descent presented with his mother to a regional hospital in Gelephu, Bhutan, “complaining of extra growth of fingers on both hands”.
Dr Pradhan noted a postaxial extra digit on both hands, connected via a soft tissue skin bridge.
The boy was otherwise healthy, with no other abnormalities detected and no family history of similar deformities or genetic disorders.
