Medical Must-See: Trapped finger points to rare Buruli ulcer diagnosis

The case is one of two that suggest the skin disease is spreading locally in NSW.

An elderly man who trapped his finger in a folding chair has become one of the first cases of locally acquired Buruli ulcer in southern NSW, Australian doctors and researchers say.

The 94-year-old’s left fourth proximal phalanx was swollen and painful for a month after the incident in November 2020.

He had not travelled outside his local area of Batemans Bay for four years and recalled no previous skin lesion or insect bites on his finger.

By mid- to late December, the wound had opened on the dorsal aspect and he sought treatment at his local hospital.
