Medical Must-See: Two anuses are not better than one

The condition, which was first described in 1956, is one of the rarest duplications of the gastrointestinal tract.

The old saying ‘two are better than one’ was not true for an unlucky patient from Mexico who was found to have dual anuses.

The 25-year-old patient presented with spontaneous daily intermittent purulent fluid discharge through the perianal region for the past month, said her doctors from the Médica Sur hospital in Mexico City.

She reported there were no relieving or aggravating factors.

Physical examination revealed a punctate lesion measuring 0.5cm x 0.5cm, located about 3cm below the native anal orifice in the lithotomy position, “with faecal matter inside and a foul odour”.
