A very unusual ‘broken bone’

An MRI got to the root of the problem

While undoubtedly a downer for the patient, his vertical penile fracture — sustained during a sexual mishap — is a straight-up rarity in the medical literature.

Writing in BMJ Case Reports, urologists explained: “[Penile fractures are] most prevalent among men in their 40s, who classically report a ‘popping’ sensation and immediate detumescence following blunt trauma.

“On examination, the penis will be grossly swollen and ecchymotic (the so-called ‘eggplant’ sign), with a palpable ‘rolling’ sign.”

The 40-year-old man in this case reported that his penis had buckled against his partner during sexual intercourse, but it resulted in an injury the case report authors were hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
