Geographic tongue

Dentists have diagnosed a man with geographic tongue after his GP noticed an unusual red map-like appearance on the surface of his tongue.

The 73-year-old Italian man was referred to a dental clinic in Milan, where oral examination revealed a flat, rounded red area surrounded by a well-defined white rim of plaque (panel A).

Follow-up visits at eight months (panel B) and 20 months (panel C) showed the red lesion migrating around the tongue.
