Female GPs earn $24 less per consulting hour: gender pay gap analysis
99% of the earnings gap is because male GPs get through more patients, a new report says.
Female GPs are billing an average of $349 per consulting hour compared with $373 for men — a 6.5% gender earnings gap — analysis by GP corporate Ochre Health has found.
The analysis of real billings between July 2023 and June 2024 concluded that “99%” of the earnings gap was due to male GPs squeezing in an extra appointment every four consulting hours compared with female GPs.
Across 511 GPs in 70 practices, women billed marginally more per appointment than men: $95.02 versus $94.89.
But men averaged 0.25 more appointments per hour, resulting in $24 more in billings an hour.
