2800 doctors to strike next month unless govt improves pay offer

Thousands of hospital doctors will strike for 24 hours next month unless the SA Government revises its offer of a 10% pay rise spread over three years.
The strike, scheduled for 30 July, would leave hospitals with public holiday levels of staffing, which would not risk patient safety but would likely delay elective surgeries, according to the SA Salaried Medical Officers Association (SASMOA).
During a one-hour stop-work meeting on Wednesday, union members voted to reject the government offer and instead push for a 30% pay rise over three years.
SASMOA said it had given the government five weeks to negotiate a new enterprise bargaining agreement and would hold multiple one-hour stop-work meetings at different hospitals during the week of 21 July, ahead of the strike.
