4 ways GPs can manage unvaxxed patients

AMA Vic has called for clarity around treating unvaccinated patients, and offers advice on how to handle the tricky situation

As GPs wait for clarity on whether they can refuse to see unvaccinated patients in their practices, the AMA in one state has offered advice on how they can manage the tricky situation in the meantime.

Following numerous queries from doctors, the AMA in Victoria has obtained legal advice that suggests doctors may cop a referral to AHPRA if they ban unvaccinated patients from face-to-face consults outside of an emergency.

This could be on the basis their care was below the standard expected and that they may pose a current or future risk to patient safety.

In a newsletter, AMA Victoria said there were currently no guidelines in the state that allow doctors in private practice to refuse to see patients who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 in non-emergency situations.
