SGLT-2 inhibitors therapy should be temporarily stopped in patients with an active infection or about to undergo surgery, to reduce the risk of severe diabetic ketoacidosis, the Australian Diabetes Society warns.

The society has issued an alert to remind doctors of the “small but definite” risk of severe diabetic ketoacidosis with the drugs, sometimes in association with near normal or only mildly elevated blood glucose levels.
