Australia’s living COVID-19 guidelines have been updated to help GPs determine when patients need to be referred to hospital. 

The current guidance is to manage self-isolating patients with mild symptoms in a similar way to seasonal flu.

But a new decision flow-chart advises GPs to watch for the following indicators the patient needs an ambulance to go to hospital:

If the patient wants to stay at home, this should be discussed with carers and local palliative care services, according to the new guidance.
