‘A real worry’: Proliferation of fake doctor profiles erodes trust in the profession, AMA says

Dr Danielle McMullen says scammers who use AI images and false accounts damage confidence in doctors.

The AMA fears a growing number of fake doctor profiles posted to social media pages are “dangerous” and risk creating mistrust in the medical profession.

Multiple Facebook pages have been detected as falsely purporting to belong to doctors specialising in dermatology, men’s health, weight loss, sex therapy and other specialties.

However, the doctors do not exist, and images of them have been generated using AI technology.

AMA president Dr Danielle McMullen describes the proliferation of the accounts as a “real worry” because they potentially undermine trust in the profession.
