Acute kidney injury linked to increased risk of dementia

Alzheimer's dementia, vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia were all associated with AKI in the Swedish study.

Acute kidney injury can increase the risk of a subsequent dementia diagnosis by more than 50%, a population-based cohort study suggests.

Preclinical studies have previously identified biochemical and pathological changes in the brain associated with acute kidney injury (AKI), according to the researchers from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet.

To further investigate, their study looked at data from patients aged 65 or older with a baseline creatinine recorded between 2006 and 2018.

They identified AKI episodes based on dialysis initiation or recorded changes in creatinine and then looked for subsequent dementia diagnoses among study participants in other Swedish databases.
