ADHD prescribing: 400 GPs apply for just 65 govt-funded training places

The training program has been massively oversubscribed, says the RACGP's Dr Sean Stevens.

The first state-funded training for GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD has been flooded with applicants, with more than 400 doctors applying for 65 training spots.

The $1.3 million WA program will involve online training developed by the RACGP and mentorship from psychiatrists and paediatricians.

The chair of the college’s WA working group on ADHD, Dr Sean Stevens, says he thought the program would easily attract 65 applicants but 400 was “beyond our best hopes”.

“We are giving weighting to rural and lower socioeconomic areas and trying to get a geographical spread with the people entering the program,” he tells 6minutes.
