ADHD linked to 71% higher mortality, review finds

But medication use was associated with 25% lower all-cause mortality, researchers found.

Patients with ADHD have a 71% higher risk of death from any cause, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Published in JAMA Network Open, the review included 19 studies published between 2012 and 2025 and included more than 15.9 million people.

The review reported that, compared with people without ADHD, those with the condition had a 71% higher all-cause mortality, 89% higher suicide mortality, 55% higher mortality from intentional or unintentional injury and a 27% higher natural-cause mortality.

All studies were observational, meaning the findings showed an association rather than causation, with the strength of the association varying widely between studies.
